2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee
The Jeep Grand Cherokee has a reputation for pairing capable off-road performance with on-road refinement. In addition, the Grand Cherokee boasts the iconic rugged Jeep look and offers many luxury features. Jeep launched a new Grand Cherokee for the 2021 model year. However, it came only as a three-row variant, called the Grand Cherokee L, while the two-row model carried over from the previous year. For the 2022 model year, Jeep is introducing a brand-new five-seater Grand Cherokee, which should go into production this fall. Here is what we know about the model so far.
Trim Levels (Exterior)
Although the two-row Grand Cherokee will feature a shorter wheelbase than that of the Grand Cherokee L, it is apparently longer than the current two-row model. The new Grand Cherokee will also feature a modified front end with a more angular and aggressive front fascia and a redesigned grille that sits slightly lower. The newly designed standard LED headlights will be slimmer, which will give the exterior design a more contemporary feel.
Engine (Power)
The Grand Cherokee will feature the same engine options as its larger sibling. These are the standard 3.6-liter V-6 engine that generates 290 horsepower and 257 pound-feet of torque and the optional 5.7-liter V-8 engine that produces a more robust output of 357 horsepower and 390 pound-feet of torque. An eight-speed automatic transmission comes standard with both engines. Rear-wheel drive is standard, and four-wheel drive optional. The new Grand Cherokee will also likely come with a plug-in hybrid powertrain option, which might be the same powertrain that currently powers the Jeep Wrangler 4Xe model.
Performance
Like the Grand Cherokee L, the new Grand Cherokee will feature multiple four-wheel-drive systems. These might include the Quadra-Trac I system, which provides efficiency by automatically switching between two-wheel and four-wheel drive, and the Quadra-Trac II and Quadra-Drive II systems, which provide maximum power and four-wheel-drive capability. Although it's not clear yet which trim levels the 2022 Grand Cherokee will offer, we'll likely see a Trailhawk model that's fitted with robust off-road equipment. Jeep will probably once again include the high-performance SRT and Trackhawk trims.
Interior
On the inside, the Grand Cherokee will offer a similar look and feel as the Grand Cherokee L. The standard infotainment system might be equipped with an 8.4-inch display, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, six speakers, and Bluetooth. As is the case with the Grand Cherokee L, the base Laredo trim will probably come with basic equipment, such as air conditioning and cloth upholstery, while the higher trims will offer luxurious materials such as quilted leather upholstery, metal finishes, and open-pore wood veneers.
Safety Features
The new Grand Cherokee will most likely offer a comprehensive list of standard driver-assist features. These might include blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, lane-keeping assist, adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go functionality, automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, and rear automatic braking. The Grand Cherokee also features at least seven air bags and a high-strength steel body to protect its passengers.
